Birdwatching became a worldwide activity during the last decades. In Madeira Islands, the VENTURA | nature emotions started getting a serious interest on this field since 2000, contributing to the knowledge of marine birds life on this archipelago promoting birdwatching trips, to Desertas Islands and Selvagens Islands, promoting contacts between birdwatchers, participated in meetings, and working together with SPEA-Madeira, Portuguese Society for the Study of the Birds, the portuguese partner of Birdlife International, allowing the presence of one of its members as observer onboard. The VENTURA | nature emotions has friendly and experienced tours leaders and organizers responsible for this activity, being present on all of the birdwatching tours, and always helping birdwatchers on bird identification.

The birdwatching in Madeira has a large potential because of the unique ecosystems that exist in the Island, with 42 breeding species and subspecies of birds, including two endemic species for Madeira, others endemic for the Macaronesian (biogeographic region which includes Madeira, Azores, Canary and Cape Verde archipelagos), and is also the southern and northern limit for some bird species.

Therefore, some of the most interesting bird species that are possible to observe in Madeira are:

Zino’s Petrel Night Tour

The Zino's night tour is a visit to the breeding sites of one the most threatened birds in Europe, the Zino's Petrel Pterodroma madeira. This resident breeder is endemic for Madeira Island and, after considered extinct by the middle of the last century, it was rediscovered on 1969. Actuality the population is estimated between 65 and 80 breeding pairs mostly confined to the high central mountain massif of Madeira, part of the area of Madeira Natural Park (MNP). The aim of this visit is to hear the night calls when they arrive at the colonies. Leaded by our guide, a certificated and experienced guide, you will have the opportunity to experience the company of this rare marine bird in an astounding scenerio.

The tour starts with pick-up at 20:00, and once at Pico do Areeiro there is a medium difficulty trekking of about 30 minutes to a point where we stay in silence trying to hear the calls. The weather and the wind conditions may condition our objective, but all efforts will be made towards our goal.  Since 1999 that a governmental resolution officially forbidden to use the path between Pico do Areeiro and Achada do Teixeira after sunset, however, the MNP allows visitors if accompanied by a certificated guide, on way to minimise impact, and trough a certified company.

For this tour is essentially to bring warm clothing, raincoat and comfortable shoes. In the tour price there is optional tax charged by the Madeira Natural Park for the project "Conservation of Zino´s Petrel through restoration of its Habitat".

Includes experienced guide, transfer with pick up in the hotel, and insurance.

Pelagic Birding Tour I - 6h 30

For this trip in Atlantic Ocean, the targeted species are pelagic seabirds nesting in the islands and other species sighted in the archipelago’s seas. The trip start from Madeira Island and is made in a rigid inflatable boat - RIB. The tour is in the afternoon to get the peak of the species activity near land.

During these trips and depending on the annual cycle of each species it’s may be possible to observe and photograph a great variety of species. The two seabirds: Zino's Petrel and Desertas Petral are without a doubt the targeted species for any birder visiting the island. But these aren't the only breeding species that can provide you with magic moments. In these waters you usually spot pther seabirds such as the Macaronesian shearwater (Puffinus baroli), Madeiran Storm Petrel (Oceanodroma castro), Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea borealis), Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus puffinus) and Bulwer’s Petrel (Bulwera bulwerii).

Depending on the season we can also spot the Great Shearwater (Puffinus gravis), Sooty Shearwater (Puffinus griseus), Wilson's Storm Petrel (Oceanites oceanicus), Long-tailed Skua (Stercorarius longicaudus), Parasitic Skua (Stercorarius parasiticus), Great Skua (Stercorarius skua) and many others.

The sea conditions on this area could change very quickly, please try to book your trip to the first days of your stay on the island, because we might have to change it due to the bad weather conditions and if you have more time we will do our best to run the tour.

Pelagic Birding Tour II - 4h

This is a special seawatching and birdwatching pelagic trip on south Madeira Island between Ponta do Garajau, located only a few miles north-east of Funchal and well-known area for Madeiran Storm-petrels which breed here with several pairs, and Ponta da Cruz, the southernmost point of Madeira, located at the west side of Funchal. Here an eastward movement in the evening is visible expressive by birds travelling to and from their breeding grounds on Desertas, with Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii in high numbers and few Fea's/Zino's Petrels Pterodroma feae/ Pterodroma madeira. It is also common to observe some species of dolphins and whales like the Common Dolphin Delphinus delphis, the Atlantic Spotted Dolphin Stenella frontalis, the Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus, and the Bryde's Whale Balaenoptera edeni.
