The Zino's night tour is a visit to the breeding sites of one the most threatened birds in Europe, the Zino's Petrel - Pterodroma madeira. This resident breeder is endemic for Madeira Island and, after considered extinct by the middle of the last century, it was rediscovered on 1969. Actuality the population is estimated between 65 and 80 breeding pairs mostly confined to the high central mountain massif of Madeira, part of the area of Madeira Natural Park (MNP). The aim of this visit is to hear the night calls when they arrive at the colonies. Leaded by João Nunes, a certificated and experienced guide, you will have the opportunity to experience the company of this rare marine bird on astounding scenery. The tour starts with pick-up at 20:00, and once at Pico do Arieiro there is a easy trekking with some
unevenness
of about 20 minutes to a point where we stay in silence trying to hear the calls. The weather and the wind conditions will determine our objective, but all the efforts will be made in that way. Since 1999 that a governmental resolution officially forbidden to use the path between Pico do Areeiro and Achada do Teixeira after sunset, however, the MNP allow visitors if accompanied by a certificated guide, on way to minimise impact, and trough a certified company. For this tour is essentially to bring warm clothing, raincoat and comfortable shoes. In the tour price there is tax charged by the Madeira Natural Park for the project "Conservation of Zino´s Petrel through restoration of its Habitat".

The Macaronesian subtropical mountain humid forest that characterize Madeira Archipelago and has been termed "laurisilva" include a flora and fauna quite exceptional and constitutes an extremely important ecosystem type that is rare worldwide. Madeira's flora comprises about 1.226 species of vascular plants, including several endemic genera (like Chamaemeles and Musschia) and over 120 Macaronesian endemic species, 66 of these are strictly endemic to Madeira. There are 11 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) within the archipelago with 42 species of birds breeding here.
